The music continues.  Carlos and I managed to get out a few nights.  On Friday we met with quite a few others for a mini-tribute to our friend JJ.  Sweet!  We then carried on to Fairfax for one of my favorite group of guys (without Bonnie Hayes for now!) at Peri’s:  The Soul Satellites—Frank Bohan, Ted O’Connell, Lloyd Meadows, Dave Burns, and the bassist subbing for Timm Walker.  We also checked on Danny Click and the Hell Yeahs making merry next door at Sleeping Lady.

On Saturday we got a heads-up that the power was out in Sausalito, so the James Moseley show was cancelled—and we had an unusual Saturday night at home!

Sunday we had to make an appearance at the Novato Theatre Benefit, and spirits were high for WonderBread 5.  Many many sought shelter from the heat at TREK Winery—and discovered this gem in downtown Novato.

The week ahead?  I know not!  On Friday we can find Lumanation at Peri’s, James Henry at Fenix, Salvador Santana & Miles Schon at George’s,  Buck Nickels and Loose Change with Third Rail at Hopmonk,  Reckless in Vegas and Pretending at Sweetwater, Phil Berkowitz and the Dirty Cats at Rancho -- hmmmmm …

There’s good money betting Carlos & I will be at The Tickets Band on Saturday night. And there’s also Beso Negro at Hopmonk, Mitch Woods at Fenix, Vinyl at 19 Broadway, Andoni at Rickey’s. 

On Sunday there’s Danny Montana at Magnolia Garden, Salsa at Fenix, The Sun Kings at Rancho – and so much more!  We’ll just have to see …

Tribute to Johnnie Jean Daniel

More to share about our beloved JJ ...

There was a small gathering in Mill Valley on Friday early evening put together quickly by some of her friends (Marie, Susan, Mark T), as a small tribute to Johnnie Jean. Fortunately her husband Ed was able to join us.  It was a last-minute thing and I was asked not to broadcast it, so please do not be disappointed if you did not hear about it.  The gathering contributed toward our healing process, especially for Ed.  There will be a very large celebration of her life planned for September 8 (probably in Fairfax), so mark the date.  More details forthcoming.

While there, the online I.J. account from the coroner's office came out, telling that a cardiac event preceded the fall to her death, with altitude and exertion as contributing factors.  She went quickly and did not suffer.    http://www.marinij.com/marinnews/ci_23879727/autopsy-reveals-overdue-san-rafael-hiker-died-from.html

Ed also sent the following, that I might share with you:

Attached are a couple photos that show where she fell.  The photo with the lake shows Sawtooth as the high ridge in the background.  She was just about the middle of the photo left to right and  about 200 feet below the ridge.  On one photo there is a yellow marker where she was found.
     The report is a few days off on when we thought we might hear from her after she got down to where there was telephone reception and when we called the park ranger to check her campsite.  She did not get to Mineral King until the preceding Wednesday afternoon, and she wanted to stay several days because it is her favorite place in the world.

By now many of you know the latest news--that despite our hopes, prayers, and convictions that she would return safely to us, the body recovered yesterday has been positively identified as Johnnie Jean.  

I'm rather at a loss for words, and feeling depleted now that there is no chance to share space with her in our world again. I'm sorry if I have not responded individually to the many of you who have been in contact. 

Our loving hearts reach out to husband Ed and her children.  We are stunned, saddened, but also enriched that her amazing life has touched ours.  

Cherish your loved ones, practice kindness, and live with a spirit of fun!

Johnnie is a remarkable woman, climbed Mt. Whitney last month on her own. She has touched many many people with her zest for fun. We're appealing to the powers of the universe to bring her home safely.  Love and strength to her husband Ed LaBarre, her daughter and son, and to us all.

Good thoughts and prayers, please--they hold power .I will update you as I hear news.

Music Fun Week of Aug. 13, 2013

This morning I dreamed I was in the mountains – thanks for the TRIP, JJ!

It’s been a difficult few days, with the disappearance and tragic death of Johnnie Jean Daniel on a mountaintop in the Sequoia National Forest.

I do believe in the anima mundi (soul of the world), and the Jungian collective unconscious—and that Johnnie’s spirit is out there circulating among us, picking us up when we are down, reminding us to accept and be kind, and to take any and every opportunity to laugh and celebrate! 

Love and Blessings to husband Ed and her extended Family.  We will celebrate her enchanted Life at a later time; her beautiful Spirit always!  ♫   ♪

Touched by an Angel: A sweet moment with Johnnie Jean Daniel, RIP

The past few days are blurring together, with the unfathomable news. Thursday JJ’s best friend notified me she was missing, Saturday they found a body but not positively identified, then Sunday came the news that it was in fact our JJ.  On Saturday, knowing someone was found, but also aware that there were other searches underway, I (and many of you) held on to the last desperate hope that the body was NOT JJ, and she would be found alive.  Therefore I went out and danced as if my life—or hers--depended on it.  On Sunday, with the finality of it, I crashed and burned. 

I must give tribute to the musicians who fed my spirit this week past:  Revolver at MAGC Thursday; Factor 11 at Trek Winery on Friday, then Sol Horizon at Hopmonk; James Moseley Dance Band at a private party on Saturday afternoon, then Andre Theirry and Zydeco Magic at the JCC, and on to Peri’s and Zydeco Flames for dessert! On Sunday, Greg Johnson’s sweet jazz piano soothed my soul at Trek.

I don’t know what the week holds for me, but want to point out that tonight (Tues.) at Fenix the Femmes Fatales (Lauralee Brown, Debra Clawson, Joan Getz & Connie Ducey) are opening the show at about 7pm. Also, James Moseley Quartet is at Panama Hotel, and Zydeco Flames at Ashkenaz.

Wednesdays it’s always fun to drop in at Dennis Haneda’s Open Mic at Hopmonk if we are able …

Thursday Miracle Mule at the PYC for Maria’s night would be cool – don’t know how much longer we’ll be able to enjoy that venue …
