Music Fun Week of Feb. 26-Mar. 5, 2014

Here's a taste of what's to come.  I hope to complete by Thursday night!
And if you liked Laura's red dress in last week's post--she's written all about it at lauramaedesigns.com (aka Lilacs & Lace).
And of course, I've got a lot more to say! ♫♪♪

Laura Mae and Ellen Jane at the Marin Symphony Feb. 25
(that's another red dress!)

Is it something in the water?  I realize I’m pretty enthusiastic about the Marin Music Scene, but this past week was an incredible gift!  Beginning with Thursday at Hopmonk Novato, Carlos & I were entertained entranced by the wonders of The MIGHTY GROOVE who always set our hearts to singing and our feet to dancing.  Preceding them was the Craig Cafall Band, who I will happily hear again when they are available.
On Friday we again stayed local (Hopmonk), not knowing anything firsthand about Rick Estrin & the Nightcats except what I had read from their online bio: some “blues, swing, and roadhouse rock & roll”.  Well, did they deliver!!  I thought I was transported to some South Side Chicago blues joint!  Their showmanship is a real kick—and they have the chops.  Highly recommended—and I hope they’ll be back soon.

Saturday night we had the privilege of experiencing first-hand the wonderfulness of Greg Johnson & Glass Brick Boulevard at Fenix.  Along with Paul Hanson on electric bassoon, dancing Rob Fordyce on bass, and Celso Alberti on drums—again I was transported to perhaps another planet.  Then came Carlos Reyes onstage to join them, and the magic was complete!  You’ve got to be there to experience them in person!
I rounded out my music calendar week with the Marin Symphony concert on Tuesday with Laura for a program of Elgar, Tchaikovsky & Beethoven – remarkable, stunning, satisfying!  ♫♪♫

This week, coming up for me and my partner-in-fun Carlos:  Thursday picks are Trek Winery for Herb Marshall Group jazz, with Dan Brown on vocals.  Also James Moseley Jazz Quartet at Seahorse; and “Freeway” Frank Bohan with Leon Bristow at Presidio Yacht Club.
Friday there’s again too much choice!  Will it be Rhythmtown Jive with ZYDECO FLAMES (and Freeway Frank) at SweetwaterGator Nation & Pulsators at HopmonkWonderbread 5 is at 19 Broadway; Volker Strifler at Fenix; The 7th Sons with Debra Clawson (1st set) at Presidio Y.C.; Noah Griffin doing Cole Porter at the Barn Theatre in Ross; and more …
Saturday?  Very likely stay in the ‘hood, with Danny Click & The Hell Yeahs! at Hopmonk.  We’ll stop by TREK for an early start with The Chime Travelers.  And then there’s Wall Street at Fenix, , Linda Imperial & David Freiberg at Rancho, Firewheel at Seahorse; something for everyone in the Saturday lineup.
Sunday, Academy Awards – where will you be?  If we’re not at TREK for their Gala, or our local Clubhouse, we might have to kick back at home …  There’s plenty of music too if that’s your choice!

Stay dry, or get wet -- Hope you have an outrageously wonderful weekend. ♫♪♫

Music Fun Week of Feb. 19-26, 2014

A Sorrow shared is half the Sorrow; a Joy shared is twice the Joy!  … Now that’s worth sharing …♫♪

Presidio Yacht Club, under The Bridge, Valentine’s Night

Happy Valentine’s Day from Laura Mae

On Wednesday I made my monthly outing to the Ray Simpson Big Band Dance at Corte Madera Community Center!  And danced the evening away.  This still seems to be one of Marin’s best-kept secrets … and you are invited!  Every 2nd Wednesday except August.
Friday a FULL MOON and Valentine’s Day at the Presidio Y.C. for Doc Kraft Dance Band.  An unusual night anyway, but so many friends started at other venues where there was not enough happening (?), and ended up here under the Golden Gate Bridge for a full house.
Saturday we missed the Chime Travelers, but ended up staying for the Comedy Show at Trek Winery.  Don’t know much about comedy (!), but it was packed, and plenty of laughter.  After that proceeded down the highway to Hopmonk, as we HAD to dance, and got our jollies with some reggae from Sol Horizon♫♪♫

This week:  Thursday at Hopmonk for the magical MIGHTY GROOVE, preceded by Craig Cafall Band.  Be there if you can for a fun musical night!  Or make your way to the Presidio Yacht Club for Eddie Neon Blues – OR more below.
Friday I’m enticed by the sound of Rick Estrin & the Nightcats at Hopmonk for some roadhouse rock & roll.  There’s also plenty going on elsewhere, with Danny Click & The Hell Yeahs at Sleeping Lady; Zoo Station and Stung at 19 Broadway; Lonestar Retrobates at PYC; and on and on.
Saturday?  The amazing fluid yet funky Greg Johnson & Glass Brick Boulevard at Fenix; Revolver at Rancho Nicasio; Monophonics & Fenton Coolfoot at 19 Broadway; Cathey Cotton at PYC; and a lot more!
Sunday, or more likely next Tuesday, we’ll be at the Marin Symphony Concert – “Quintessential Beethoven, Chic Tchaikovsky”.  A local treasure.  Try it, you’ll like it!

Hope to see you soon sharing the Joy!  ♫♪♫♪

Music Fun Week of Feb. 12-19, 2014

GRATITUDE:  Sometimes it’s buried away.  But remember, it’s there, in your Heart.  Look for it, and embrace it!

Grateful for the RAIN!  But we must continue to conserve water.  If you adopt this habit, you are lessening your ecological footprint on our earth.  And that feels good! ♫♪♫

Grateful ♫♪♪ for a good week of dancing!  Happy to be at Hopmonk last Thursday for LUMANATION with Bobby G and Saxy Susan Copperman!  Less than an hour, but what JOY they express, and a fitting tribute to Bob Marley!  Iriefuse followed, and they are VERY good, but there’s a wisdom and expression that come with age and experience … hope they follow their journey with passion.
Sunnbolt 1st Friday Jam was outstanding, with Davey Pattison of Montrose & Robin Trower delivering a set that showed that he still has it! (with help from friends Bruce Wilmott and Knut Kramer!)  And Revenant with Chris Carpiniello was like fireworks!
Saturday we made it down to Presidio Yacht Club for a 7th Sons party, with the very special Debra Clawson joining them on vocals.  More, please!
Sunday Carlos & I chilled – a good day to stay home and be cozy.

This week, (Wednesday, tonight) I’m hoping I’ll get this posted so Carlos & I can spend time at a monthly Marin gift—the guys (& gal) of the Ray Simpson Big Band giving us some love and dancing music at Corte Madera Community Center!  No cover! And there are free snacks …
Thursday get yourself down to the Presidio Y.C. where Maria is still hosting music and preparing her home-style meals.  There’s also Dan Brown at Pub Republic, Fogdub at 19 Broadway, Spark & Whisper opening for Bobby Jo Valentine at Fenix, etc.
Friday is Valentine’s Day!  And a FULL MOON to boot!  A difficult choice to make … but it's very possible we’ll be at Doc Kraft’s party at the Presidio Y.C.  Or perhaps we’ll show at the Elks Club for The 7th Sons and Debra Clawson.  And there’s Zydeco Flames at Eagles, Cabaret d’Amour at Hopmonk, The 85s at 19 Broadway, Key Lime Pie at Nourish, Dee Bell and Marco Silva at The Music Box, and much more – once again an embarrassment of riches from which to choose!
Saturday—I’ve got to take a breath and post this, will add plans later …

Listen to the Music, and Dance (like nobody's watching)!!
Remember to TIP our wonderful and talented MUSICIANS!  Also please support all the gracious venues that support MUSIC.
